Coordinator

Roberto Iuppa – University of Trento

Roberto Iuppa is a full professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Trento, where he has been working since 2016. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous national and international scientific collaborations. He has been a member of the ATLAS collaboration since 2014, where he has contributed to studies on muon tracker alignment, b-tagging calibration, and analyses related to Higgs boson production and the search for new physics. He has carried out testing activities for 3D pixel detectors as part of the ITk project for HL-LHC, in collaboration with FBK and TIFPA.
Since 2016, he has been actively involved in the CSES-Limadou mission. He coordinated the Trento group within the collaboration and held positions of responsibility in the design of the HEPD-02 detector, for which he proposed the introduction of MAPS sensors. He contributed to the development of trigger systems for the measurement of charged particles and the identification of gamma transients. He was appointed a member of the mission's international Joint Working Group in 2022.

He participated in the ARGO-YBJ collaboration (2007-2022), contributing to the study of cosmic ray anisotropy and the antiproton/proton ratio in atmospheric shower data. He has conducted research stays at CERN, IHEP in Beijing, and the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC). He has coordinated or contributed to numerous research and development activities, particularly on monolithic active sensors (MAPS), high-temperature superconducting magnets, deep neural networks for on-chip applications, detectors for photonic and particle transients, and gas detectors. He has been scientific director or co-proponent of funded projects such as ARCADIA, HDMS, SPES, ASTROTOR, SiliciSpazio, SpaceItUp, SPaRKLE, CUBE, and NUSES.
He has been a member and referee of the INFN National Scientific Commission 2 (Astroparticle Physics), where he participated in evaluation and scientific guidance activities. He also actively participates in the drafting of national and European project proposals, contributing to obtaining funding of more than €0.5 million/year.

He has supervised over 20 doctoral students, research fellows, and postdocs. He has taught courses at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels on topics including particle physics, detectors, and research methodology. He has been a member of academic competition committees and has held positions on the department council and local and national scientific committees.
He is the author of articles published in peer-reviewed journals and has presented papers at international conferences. He has collaborated with the ESA Academy on educational activities and with ASI and other agencies on space missions and instrument development.

Deputy-coordinator

Myrka Zago - University of Rome "Tor Vergata"

Myrka Zago is a bioengineer, full professor of Physiology at the Department of Civil Engineering and Computer Science Engineering of the University of Rome Tor Vergata.Myrka Zago

She is the Director of  the Center for Space Biomedicine at the same University. She studies and teaches space physiology.

She discovered along with her colleagues the brain mechanisms involved in the representation of the effects of gravity on the body.

She performed experiments on more than 20 astronauts flying on board of the Space Shuttle or the International Space Station. Her research has been published in the most important international journals, including Science, Nature Neuroscience and npj Microgravity (Nature portfolio).

She applies the results of her research to the development of new neurorehabilitation protocols for patients at the IRCCS Santa Lucia Foundation in Rome.

PhD programme committee

The PhD Program Committee organizes the courses and activities of the PhD program, defines the curricula, and approves new member admissions. It oversees the preparation of the Study Manifesto, which includes the educational activities and schedule. The committee monitors the research progress of each doctoral student to ensure the acquisition of scientific research methodology. It approves the annual educational programs of the PhD students, including timing and methods for the presentation and evaluation of any intermediate work.

The committee assigns each doctoral student a supervisor and one or more co-supervisors and authorizes students to undertake periods of training abroad or internships lasting more than six months at public or private institutions. It approves thesis co-supervision programs and authorizes any supplementary, integrated, or extracurricular teaching and research activities. It evaluates the activities of doctoral students annually and decides on admission to the next academic year or on thesis referee approval for degree attainment. The committee approves the Coordinator's annual report and fosters connections with other universities and public and private entities to enhance research activities. It proposes to the Rector the members of the committees for PhD admission and final examination.
